a) There were no jumpers from the upper floors; but people were hanging out those windows

The first due engine must have taken some beating. After finally making it to the apartment and finding the door open, they reportedly then had to go downstairs to get to eventually get to the seat of the fire.

Many guys took a real beating today. Climbing stairs in full PPE, in the dark, on SCBA air doing searches of stairways, apartments and hallways. All victims then had to be carried down the stairs and out in a hurry. Many lives were saved.
Take a look at the pics of the faces of the guys out in the street afterward.

I believe this is the building we had a bad compactor fire back in the mid 80's. We pulled up second due with smoke pushing out all over with people screaming out the windows. The chauffer of 88 Engine got on the PA and tried talking to the people.

If I remember right I believe a number of these floors are duplex and criss cross
Yes indeed, I remember showing up with E 88, people were hanging out windows, I thought for sure someone was going to jump and land on me. Prayers for all those involved.

I've done my best to put together a run down of EMS traffic for this job. Be mindful dispatch was chaotic at times and this incident was run across 3 channels (Bronx North, Bronx South and Citywide 1) but I've done my best to put together the traffic from Citywide which was the primary channel for the incident. I hope this provides an interesting insight for members into the EMS perspective at an incident like this.

This fatal fire took place within 1 1/2 miles (walking distance) of some of NYCs other very serious fatal fires.

On August 21, 1988, only about 1 1/4 miles away from this fire was the illegal "El Hoya social club" fire, located at 1748 Jerome Ave, corner of East 175th St.
That fire took the lives of 7 individuals

Then on March 25, 1990, only 1 1/2 miles away from this apartment building fire was another illegal social club fire which took the lives of 87 people.
That social club, called "Happyland" was located at 1956 Southern Blvd near East Tremont Ave
