I believe we lost that whole row of stores at around 3:00 am on the night of the 2nd Blackout.
You mentioned the new cockloft nozzles. In your opinion, do you think they are more easially maneuverable and efficient that the old lightweight aluminum Rockwood cellar pipes that were sold for aluminum scrap?Keep in mind, we were not there. Also keep in mind that the companies were operating for some time before the start of the videos that were provided on this site. It is quite common to begin an interior attack only to discover one or more of dozens or more conditions which dictate the switch to a defensive strategy. That takes a little time to set up. Pair up engines to tower ladders, stretch 3.5”, position Tower Ladders and make sure all members are off the roof and withdrawn from the interior. To me it looked well choreographed. Towards the latter part of the video it is impressive to see the well developed fire streams and amount of GPM being applied. (4 TL, 3 multiversals, and multiple hand lines ). I hope in the near future that the job places a non oscillating Blitz Fire nozzle on each engine similar to the planned addition of cockloft nozzles to all engines. The Blitzfire is a nice appliance that fits between the 2-1/2” line and the multiversal. And just as easy to maneuver and move as a 2-1/2” (nozzle closed while moving) with flows of 350-500 GPM. Once again some excellent videos provided by several of the regular videographers. Thank you gentlemen for bringing the fireground into our living rooms. Stay safe. Happy Holidays
My understanding is the 2" hose is not an experiment but rather now standard issue as the lead length in the residential high rise hose pack configuration, per the engine operations manual. The FDNY has had 2 1/2" for the last hundred years, mainly for fires that are "Incompatible with the use of 1 3/4"." Such as: An advanced fire upon arrival, fire in large uncompartmented area, exterior exposure protection, when operating off a Standpipe, and also whenever the I.C. directs the use of 2 1/2". FDNY is experimenting with 2" hose for use in some of the above situations, especially standpipe operations.
