Under STARFIRE it was

75 43 42 46.  33 59 27F

48 95 88.        56 36 38

that would be one helluva change if 81 now went in 3d due...

Thanks Mike. That certainly makes sense. I would think 48 before 46. My run down was the actual one from a job at that box sometime in the last decade. Perhaps that was the primary Starfire assignment, or maybe 48/56 were out at the time, or maybe BARB has changed it all.

Remember since the date of that card Eng 46 & 48 have moved.
Also Lad 36 use to respond on the box to a location a few blocks away (University Ave & W 183 St).
In this area, Eng 42 goes on the box, & Eng 48 drops back. Eng 46 was never on the box, but should be 4 or 5 due. So years back, the 2nd due truck was 27. Today they should be 4 due with 36 fifth due. Ladder 46 should be next followed by 37 & 38. Next should be 44 & 45. The 5th alarm would be 19 & 58.

And 37 Truck used to be second due at W 184 St & Grand Ave, a mere three blocks away. And on this box they were on the third alarm.

Luv ' ya Atlas,  but 37 and 38 before 46. BARB will prove me wrong.

You're right, fdce54, L37 used to respond in that neighborhood before there was a L56 or 59.

Never could figure out why 92/44 were so high on the response chart. Nearly 2.5 miles away, a lot longer than many other companies. Straight run up the Concourse i guess the determining factor,  I guess.

I hate to say this, but pre- 56 & 59 truck, Ladder 27 came out to West 184 St. on boxes west of Jerome Ave. Ladder 27 ended at Davidson Ave & West 184 St / box 3317. Ladder 56 took replaced L-27 even from Eng 42 quarters before moving to Eng 48.

Ladder 37 covered boxes on East 184 St from Jerome Ave east heading toward the Concourse 2nd due.

Ladder 46 responded on boxes 2nd due near University Ave - north of Fordham Rd. They had a small 2nd area south of Kingsbridge Rd.

Ladder 49 came in second due with L-33 first due along University Ave - south of West Tremont Ave.
FDNY did not want to send L-45 into the Bronx on the box for a good number of years. They had a big area of Manhattan to cover 1st due.

Remember that in the old days the assignment cards were all hand made, the first set of computer based card were generated in the 70's by the Rand Corp. based on their studies.

And the hand made cards were determined by one primary factor. ..distance from a firehouse to the box location.

Distance was calculated by rolling a small wheel, calibrated to the scale of a large map, along the streets on the map located at the Alarm Assignment Division at FDNY Headquarters.

If necessary, members working at the Division (often FF'S on light duty) would make a street level route reconnaissance.

One way streets were not considered, as emergency vehicles were assumed to disregard traffic flow direction and get to the box by the most direct route.

If distances were equal or very close, secondary factors included:
1. The availability of major thoroughfares for one company vs another.
2. Street closures due to construction or seasonal events (I.e., school playstreet), or possible bridge openings, among others.
3. The location of other companies to fill in (I.e., assign E48 north rather than E38 or 63 to the south so as not strip the northeast Bronx of coverage).
4. No 3d due company assigned to a box where the distance to it was equal to or greater than a mile and a half.

Once the assignment was determined it was sent "through the bag" to division commanders for approval. They in turn would consult battalion or company commanders if necessary to ensure route accuracy.

Once approved by the chain of command, the cards were typewritten, reproduced and sent to Divisions affected. Changes to existing cards were published in Department Special Orders.

As Atlas said this was all before the early 1970's when computer generated assignments began. But if you follow gman's card postings, their accuracy was precise and uncanny (allowing for new housing construction and unit movement to new quarters).

They got it right without the use of computers.
