Might be L26 as they were in the left bay looking at the FH.

Photo is of L26's 1953 Pirsch rolling out of their old 52 E. 114th St. firehouse. Three 1953 Pirsch 85ft. aerials were originally assigned to 26, 31 & 123. FDNY specs at that time asked for NO cab doors.

Engine 80 moved to 69/28 and Ladder 23 moved to 37/40 on November 28, 2008 after a fire in their quarters.

Does anyone recall how long they were relocated?

The companies also relocated again for renovations in 2014.

Does anyone know those dates?

Ladder 23 was only in their own house for 20 years (1898-1918). Is this is a record for the least amount of time in a permanent quarters? Also, a lot of companies were only combined in the 40's and 50's. I wonder what the reason was for moving the truck.

After 2nd section of E80 was disbanded in 1915 their big 2-bay firehouse had lots of room.  ;)

Engine 40 and Ladder 35 had new quarters built for them in 1961:

Redevelopment and construction of a high rise building 27 years later required Engine 40 and Ladder 35 to vacate those quarters.  Their new firehouse is on the ground floor of the high rise that was built:

Engine 49 on Welfare Island had a new firehouse built in 1949 and then was disbanded 9 years later in 1958.

I believe this was the new firehouse:

Nothing beats E89/L39 which were both organized at 1799-1st Avenue on Feb 1, 1909 then disbanded Jan. 1, 1916 with E89 getting reorganized as E91-2 and L39 moving up to the Bronx replacing Combination Engine Co. 69 on E. 233rd St.  ;)

Marine 8 had new quarters at the foot of 52nd street in 1962 and was disbanded in 1970 after only 8 years.

A new firehouse was built on Roosevelt Island in 1981, after 49 was disbanded, potentially for 260, and was never assigned a regular engine or ladder.

Mack, in no way am I doubting your facts or wisdom, but, are you sure 49 used that second house on Welfare Island? I thought is was being built for them when they were disbanded and that only the Mask Service Unit used it.

I was wondering how the Department determines new firehouse locations. Example what was behind the decision to construct two houses (53/43 & 35/14) on 3rd Avenue in Manhattan approximately 22 blocks apart or build a new house on St. John's Place in Brooklyn (234/123) 11 blocks from an existing house (280/132).

Manhattan - No - I am not sure that Engine 49 actually used the second Welfare Island firehouse in the picture.  You are probably right.  I used the date listed in Mike Boucher's history for a move into a new Welfare Island firehouse in 1949.  Engine 49's first firehouse was listed as built in 1882.  Engine 49 was disbanded in 1958 before this picture was taken.  Welfare Island became home of FDNY's Fire Academy in 1962.

1960s Originally Blackwell's Island (renamed Welfare Island, then renamed Roosevelt Island) firehouse built 1882 (pictures taken FDNY Fire Academy):

Collyer's Mansion Condition Origin

Homer Lusk Collyer (November 6, 1881 ? March 21, 1947) and Langley Wakeman Collyer (October 3, 1885 ? c. March 9, 1947), known as the Collyer brothers, were two brothers from Harlem who became infamous for their bizarre natures and compulsive hoarding. For decades, the two lived in seclusion in their Harlem brownstone at 2078 Fifth Avenue (at the corner of 128th Street) where they obsessively collected books, furniture, musical instruments, and myriad other items, with booby traps set up in corridors and doorways to ensnare intruders. In March 1947, both were found dead in their home surrounded by over 140 tons of collected items that they had amassed over several decades. Since the 1960s, the site of the former Collyer house has been a pocket park, named for the brothers.      - from  http://harlemworldmag.com/56456-2/

FF Daniels, who was standing on the top of the ladder, succeeded by an effort of great strength and dexterity, in getting the young man safely on the ladder. He caught the full weight of Windman's body. Had it not been for his remarkable strength, he would have been thrown from his position.
