FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Way back in the forties, at Engine 225 we had a fireman named John Gunning who showed me pictures of him sitting on the hose reel that went with the steam pumper. He also took me down in the basement and showed me the pot belly stove that kept the water hot in the boiler of the horse drawn steam...

Not to date myself but I was on scene in Brooklyn back then as an Aux fireman. Still have vivid memories of the tail section of the jet, the Pillar of Fire Church and the total destruction of the area. . Where does time go.

close, that is the rig and I think that is was called a cities service rig. The one at 310, as I remember it, over 60 years ago, did not have that big booster reel and had ladder supports above the hose bed with with a bunch of ladders on them. Thank for the post.

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Mack,  great post on 310/174. Prior to the forming of Ladder 174 Engine 310 ran with a Ward QUAD rig for a good number of years. I know it was there in the fifties. A real long rig with a bunch of ladders plus regular engine company equipment. Also, although I might be wrong, I do believe that...

FDNY Chief Officer Cars and Vehicles

soda acid  Take a good look, that sign on the light pole says " ONE WAY"  which is what Vermont Street always has been, a  one way street. Every other north south running street alternates direction, one north the next south, all the way east from Pennsylvania ave to Crescent St.

I see somebody posted that the street sign says Wyona St, which was one block east of Vermont St. I looked the pictures over and I cant find it. Still sure that Pitkin and Vermont was it. Yes...

68jk09 Chief. Yes you hit it right on the head. That picture brings back memories. There is a good chance that you might have seen me at that job or others in that area. E225 was most likely first due there with E290 and E233 from Hull St filling it out and L103 second due truck. On scene I wore...

yes, you might be right, turning 84 this June.  That picture of the fire boat that I was in the old time fire movies had to be the Smith, Marine 8 and 69mets father was captain on board.

reference to my last post, those red steel helmets were being worn by an auxiliary fireman. Those helmets (world war 1 U S Army issue) were also issued in yellow color to air raid wardens 1940-44. We still had them in the early fifties before being issued the New Yorker style yellow plastic...
